SISTER OWNED ONLINE GIFT COMPANY MAKES A HOME IN BOERNE, TX

(BOERNE, TX) November, 2006 -- The pioneering online gift company, BEYOND BOOKMARKS, relocated from Tennessee to Texas, re-opening their virtual doors in January 2006. After an extensive search of the greater San Antonio area, Boerne just felt like home.

In October 2005 Kay Davey and her nieces Christy Bradshaw and Wendy Garcia began scouring the greater San Antonio area for the perfect space for their online gift company, BEYOND BOOKMARKS. It was imperative that they find a space outside the bustle of the city, but close enough to access essential resources like Office Depot and Costco. They were looking for a town rural enough to feel like home, but not so rural that a semi-truck couldn’t pull in to unload a shipment of Wonder Bubbles. Christy, the company’s president, had a list of requirements for the space, but the main priority was that it feel right. “We didn’t want a warehouse,” says owner Kay Davey, “we wanted a ware-home.”

Luckily Wendy, a member of the BEYOND BOOKMARKS board of directors, is a San Antonio resident and was able to be an efficient guide to Kay (from Florida) and Christy (from New York City). The trio had only three short days in which to find a space to relocate in less than three months. “Wendy had lined up a number of site visits, which was fantastic,” says Christy, “but we still weren’t finding what we wanted.” That’s when we headed out to Boerne. Something about the town held us there and we drove up and down I-10 pulling into every location that had a space for rent…or whose tenants might be convinced to move out.” On Kay and Christy’s last day in town, taking a detour back to Boerne for one last look before heading to the airport, they found their spot at 31007 IH-10 W. Before even calling the contact number posted on the door, Kay placed a call to co-owner and sister Carol Moore to say they’d found their new home.

Through the help of Christy’s husband, principal architect of the New York design firm AvroKO, and the development team at Michael’s Properties their ware-home took shape. A combination of modern design and antique embellishments (like the re-painted chairs found at The Antique Mall in downtown Boerne) creates an open and bright space that is a far cry from the typical cold warehouse.

The company was founded by sisters Kay Davey and Carol Moore in March 2003 in the small town of Ashland City, TN where Carol had been a resident for over 30 years. Because of the nature of online businesses, the four officers (Kay & Carol and Carol’s daughters Wendy and Christy) were able to work together while living in different parts of the country. Early in 2005, they came to the decision that the company (and the family) would benefit from a centralized location. Kay and Carol both agreed that San Antonio, where Wendy lives with her husband and two children, would be a great place to live and an ideal location for the business. The decision was easy. The company re-opened their virtual doors from their new Boerne location on January 2, 2006.

It’s been a busy year getting settled in while continuing to offer great service to customers across the country. The BEYOND BOOKMARKS team was able to take a break in April when they participated as sponsors for the Hill Country Animal League’s Easter Sunday benefit with Shannon McNally. “We took off running and never had an opportunity to say hello to our new neighbors. This event gave us an opportunity to meet some of the Boerne community. We plan to get involved in more local events in the future,” says owner Carol Moore. In the past the company has contributed care packages for college students, summer campers, pets, and the military through organizations such as The Boys & Girls Club, the Make a Wish Foundation, Marine Parents United, local San Antonio schools, and, most recently, the Hill Country Mission for Health. “It is important to us that we give back to our national community,” says Carol, “what better place to start than right here at home.”

Kay has since purchased a home in Boerne and Carol is nestling into a convenient spot between BEYOND BOOKMARKS and Wendy’s house (aka – the GRANDKIDS). Christy still telecommutes from NYC, but makes frequent “site visits.” This month the family will introduce themselves to the greater San Antonio area on Great Day Sunday and Great Day SA.
